Printing Auxiliaries

Printing Auxiliaries by Neochem

Textile printing is localised dyeing, colour applied to specific areas of fabric with precision, repeat after repeat.

What determines whether that print is sharp or blurred, vibrant or dull, wash-fast or not, comes down to the auxiliaries working alongside the dye or pigment. The thickener controls paste viscosity and print edge definition. The binder bonds pigment to fibre. The fixative locks the dye in place. The washing-off agent removes what shouldn’t remain. Get the auxiliary chemistry right, and the print delivers. Get it wrong, and no amount of downstream correction can recover the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of thickener is suitable for reactive printing?

BRILLOPRINT® RPGD performs across rotary and flatbed reactive printing systems as a hybrid synthetic-natural alginate replacement, offering better colour yield and levelness over wide viscosity and speed ranges. BRILLOPRINT® RBT is a fully synthetic alginate replacement designed for sharper definition and high colour yield where print edge quality is the priority.

AMPINOL® ESS Ultra removes unfixed dye and thickener residue from the fabric surface after steaming, preventing re-deposition during rinsing. This direct removal of surface dye and residue significantly improves perceived colour depth, brightness, and wash fastness on reactive-printed goods.

PRIMAPRINT® ZFF is a formaldehyde-free cross-linking fixative aligned with GOTS 6.0 requirements. For programmes where formaldehyde-free is not mandated but low formaldehyde is required for export RSL compliance, PRIMAPRINT® NTLF provides a very low formaldehyde alternative.

Yes. The PRIMAPRINT®, BRILLOPRINT®, TRUTONE®, and DYFAST® CFI ranges are APEO-NPEO free and aligned with REACH, ZDHC MRSL, and GOTS requirements. Full SDS and ZDHC MRSL conformity documentation is available.

Role of Printing Auxiliaries in Textile Printing

Print quality is a system outcome; every auxiliary in the paste plays a specific role, and each depends on the others performing correctly.

Thickeners control paste rheology and print edge definition. Too thin, colour bleeds; too thick, penetration suffers, and wash-off becomes difficult. Binders in pigment printing form the film that bonds pigment to fibre; the binder’s glass transition temperature determines hand-feel and fastness simultaneously. Fixatives manage reactive dye bonding to cellulosic fibres during steaming or curing. Anti-migration agents prevent dye or pigment movement during drying, protecting print sharpness. Urea substitutes reduce ETP load in reactive printing without compromising colour yield or fixation.

Neochem's printing auxiliaries range

Our printing auxiliaries portfolio covers pigment, reactive, disperse, discharge, and value-added printing systems, built on four decades of application work with commercial mills.

PRIMAPRINT®

PRIMAPRINT® is a complete APEO-free pigment printing system producing soft printed shades with high fastness, superior sharpness, brightness, and print storage stability.

Binders

Binders are the core performance component in a pigment paste; they form the polymer film that bonds pigment particles to the fibre surface and determines both the mechanical strength of the print (wash, rub, and dry-clean fastness) and the tactile quality of the printed area (hand-feel and softness).

  1. PRIMAPRINT® USB Plus: A new-generation ultra-soft binder with excellent fastness and sharp print quality on cotton, viscose, and blends.

  2. PRIMAPRINT® HFSS: Formulated for superb softness and high fastness, suited to premium applications where both attributes must be delivered together.

  1. PRIMAPRINT® SN-FT Plus: A high-performance thickening agent with low dosage requirement, suitable across cotton, viscose, polyester, and blended fabrics in rotary and screen printing.

  2. PRIMAPRINT® SN-FT: The standard synthetic thickening agent for the pigment printing system across the same substrates.

  3. PRIMAPRINT® KTH: A synthetic thickening agent specifically for khadi paste preparation and coating applications, with a wider viscosity dosage range suited to the higher-viscosity requirements of these end uses.

Fixative agents

Fixative agents cross-link the binder film after curing, improving the durability of the binder-pigment-fibre bond and enhancing wash and rub fastness.

  1. PRIMAPRINT® ZFF is a formaldehyde-free cross-linking fixative agent for pigment printing on cotton, viscose, polyester, and blends, the cleanest option for GOTS and export RSL compliance.

  2. PRIMAPRINT® NTLF is a very low formaldehyde fixative agent, providing a performance-economics balance for programmes where formaldehyde-free is not mandated.

  3. PRIMAPRINT® NT is a low formaldehyde fixative, suited to standard pigment printing programmes on all fabric types.

Additives

Print paste additives address specific process stability and quality challenges that arise during production runs, particularly in rotary printing, where long machine run times expose any weakness in paste formulation.

  1. PRIMAPRINT® MEP is an anti-choking agent that prevents screen blockage during extended print runs, maintaining consistent paste flow through rotary and flatbed screen apertures over time.

  2. PRIMAPRINT® APS is a pigment printing softener that imparts a smooth handle to the printed area after curing, used where a softer tactile result is required beyond what the binder alone delivers.

  3. PRIMAPRINT® RMA is a special rheology modifier that prevents viscosity drop in the print paste throughout machine running, critical for maintaining print sharpness and colour consistency from the first repeat to the last on a long production run.

BRILLOPRINT®

The BRILLOPRINT® range covers all the auxiliary chemistry required for reactive printing on cellulosic fabrics, disperse printing on polyester, and the supporting chemistry shared across systems, thickeners, urea substitutes, antifoams, resist salts, and washing-off agents.

Reactive printing, thickeners

Reactive printing thickeners must maintain stable viscosity through the full print run, release dye efficiently during steaming, and wash out cleanly after fixation without leaving residue that reduces colour brightness or blocks fabric pores.

  1. BRILLOPRINT® RPGD is a hybrid synthetic-natural thickener that replaces sodium alginate, delivering better colour yield and levelness across wide viscosity and machine speed ranges on cotton and viscose in both rotary and screen printing.

  2. BRILLOPRINT® RBT is a fully synthetic thickener for replacing alginate/gum, providing sharp print quality, better colour yield, good definition, and levelness with easy wash-off, suited to applications where maximum print sharpness is the priority.

Reactive printing, urea substitutes & eco additives

Urea is used in reactive print pastes to maintain moisture during steaming and improve dye solubility, but it contributes significantly to ETP nitrogen load.

  1. BRILLOPRINT® WPD is an eco-friendly alternative to urea in print paste, achieving a 50% reduction in urea requirement at significantly lower dosage with very high ETP load reduction and no adverse effect on shade brilliancy or depth, available in liquid form for continuous range and auto-dosing systems.

  2. BRILLOPRINT® PRPT is a new-generation additive for reactive printing, used as an eco-friendly alternative to urea with significantly less dosage and lesser impact on the environment, suited to digital reactive printing and standard screen applications.

Reactive printing, resist salts

  1. Resist salt (m-nitrobenzene sulphonate) is used in reactive print pastes to prevent premature reduction of reactive dyes during steaming, protecting colour yield and brightness.

  2. BRILLOPRINT® RS is a resist salt replacement in powder form for cotton and viscose reactive printing.

  3. BRILLOPRINT® RSL is the same resist salt replacement chemistry in liquid form, offering easier handling and dosing in automated paste preparation systems.

Reactive printing, antifoam & washing-off

  1. BRILLOPRINT® APD is an anti-foam and anti-frothing agent for reactive printing on cotton and viscose in rotary and screen systems. Trapped air in print paste causes pin-holes, uneven penetration, and print levelness defects; APD eliminates foam before printing and during the paste mixing stage to ensure consistent paste quality and print uniformity.

  2. AMPINOL® ESS Ultra, included in the reactive printing system, is an excellent washing-off agent with superb anti-tinting properties specially recommended for reactive print washing, removing unfixed dye and thickener residue completely after steaming to improve colour brightness and fastness ratings.

Disperse printing, thickeners & auxiliaries

Disperse printing on polyester requires a different thickener chemistry from reactive printing, one that is stable at the high temperatures of thermosol fixation and compatible with disperse dye chemistry.

  1. BRILLOPRINT® DSPT is a disperse synthetic thickener for polyester and polyester-blend fabrics in rotary and screen printing systems.

  2. BRILLOPRINT® DHPT is a disperse hybrid thickener for the same substrate range, offering a blend of synthetic and natural thickener characteristics for specific viscosity profiles.

Discharge printing

Discharge printing removes ground-colour dye from specific areas of a pre-dyed fabric to create white or coloured patterns with exceptional colour vibrancy and a soft hand-feel that is impossible to achieve with pigment overprint.

  1. TRUTONE® DC White is a discharge white paste for cotton, viscose, and their blends in rotary and screen printing, used to discharge the ground shade to white.

  2. TRUTONE® DC Clear is a discharge clear paste for the same substrates, used for creating transparent discharge effects or as a base for illuminating colour discharge applications.

  3. TRUTONE® DC Agent is the catalyst for discharge printing on cotton, viscose, and blends, promoting the reductive discharge reaction during the steaming fixation stage.

DYFAST® CFI

Crocking, the transfer of colour from the fabric surface to other surfaces under dry or wet rubbing, is a critical fastness parameter for printed and deeply dyed cellulosic fabrics. It is measured as a standard test by most international brands and is a common reason for shipment rejection in export markets.

Crock fastness improvers

  1. DYFAST® CFI Plus is a novel formaldehyde-free crocking fastness improver for cotton, viscose, and blended fabrics, applied on the stenter at padding dosage of 30 to 40 gpl.

GLIDEX®

Post-print finishing with silicone emulsions imparts a premium soft, smooth handle to pigment-printed fabrics, addressing one of the key limitations of pigment printing, where the binder film can stiffen the printed area relative to the unprinted ground.

Silicone finishing for pigment-printed fabrics

GLIDEX® Prime and GLIDEX® PP are block silicone emulsions delivering ultra-smooth soft handle on pigment-printed fabrics. Both exhibit high shear stability, important for consistent application in padding and exhaustion systems, and are stable across a wide pH range of 4.0 to 10.0, making them compatible with the acidic and mildly alkaline finishing bath conditions encountered in commercial production. Suitable for both exhaust and continuous (padding) finishing processes.
